As for age gap dating, the “rules” can be as flexible or rigid as you wish.
No matter what type of dating, if there is a mutual attraction or interest between both parties, the age gap should not matter. The key premise in age gap dating is that they are responsible adults and are free to choose the partner they want.
That said, however, given that there may be an age gap of 5, 10, or even 20 years between the two parties, the expectations, points of view on social behavior or “rules” of dating between them may differ. Thus, it is perhaps wise to consider following some loose dating rules.
Some suggested rules to bear in mind are as follows:
#1 The larger the age gap, the more likely there are differences in the outlook and viewpoints of the two parties. Generational differences can definitely be overcome, but given the huge changes in social attitudes and outlooks over the last 15-20 years, there may be different opinions held by either party which needs to be respected. For example, differences in the way social media is used ie Facebook or Twitter. The younger generation often records every little action (even eating and drinking) for public showing. It needs understanding from the older partner.
#2 The emotional needs of a younger woman or man may vary considerably from those of an older man or woman. This especially refers to younger women who generally take more time to mature than their male counterparts. In addition, younger women may be thinking of starting a family whereas the older men may have had a family already and do not wish to go through fatherhood again; similarly, older women with younger men may have related issues to address and resolve.
#3 The relationship depends on how it started. For example, if the relationship begins with mutual interests such as playing the same sports, doing the same hobbies, or even working in the same office, then it’s wise to try to foster these interests. If it is more to the relationship than the younger person taking advantage of the older one financially, then it will set the stage for a much stronger relationship in the future.
In many ways, age gap relationships are just like any other relationships— there will be ups and downs. However, in view of the age differences between the two parties, it’s wise to always bear in mind that special care and understanding are needed when handling certain situations, issues, and opinions.
