My first date idea would be for the lady that I was dating would have the choice of where to spend the day. but evening maybe a romantic candlelit dinner and chat the night away.

For me a first date is heralded by a fair amount of on line chatting and ideally some face to face time on skype where a sense of shared interests, chemistry, compatibility are acquired
Then, for a first date, all bets are off about what it must look like.
The where, when and what could include flying to some exotic place to meet for a week - sleeping in separate accommodations, etc.
I think that the quick requirement for a judgement laden impression arising from the need for a single stressful meet and greet that last for 30 minutes over coffee, is so superficial that true gems are completely misclassified as fools gold and not burnished 24 K.
Going slow and being thoughtful and considerate isn't a mantra just for standing in a reception line- it really applies to the respect for the emotional risk anyone takes on when getting to know someone .... who may be the one! (and the only one!!)
