My most comfortable first date is at a coffee house, someplace easy to find and meet someone. Coffee houses are set up for easy conversations and sharing a coffee or tea allows a few minutes of familiar distraction, mean while looking for some common interests, offering a little life/dating history and feeling for long term as well as short term desires. A nice thing about a cafe is that a coffee doesn't take that long and it is easy to move the conversation out into the evening; in Santa Cruz the beach is near by and to spend the rest of the afternoon talking and looking at things that washed up with the tide...

My ideal first date would be to meet informally in a casual setting such as a local park, shopping mall, or coffee shop where we could talk, have a bite to eat, be ourselves, and get to know each other better. There would be little pressure for us to try and be something we are not. We would not have any unrealistic expectations about each other. We would have time to decide whether we wanted to extend the date and do something else together, plan for another date together and meet again later on, or respectfully decide to decline any further involvement between us and go our separate ways.
